Warrandyte Cricket Club’s Women’s team commenced 1975/76 with a squad of 16 players formed by sisters Suzanne Martin (Chapman) and Jenny Chapman who both gained clearances from Mitcham Cricket Club.

Coached by Allan Chapman (until his death following the 1980/1 season) the team won every game of the 1975/76 season including an outright win in the Grand final.

The initial squad included future stalwarts of note: Maria McGhee, Teresa Prince, Sandra Jeffs and Jenni Chapman (McLaws). Following the death of Allan Chapman the team was coached by Maria McGhee and then Peter Adams til the end of 1983/4. Brian Chapman commenced as coach in 1984/85 and remained until the cessation of the team in 1993. The team played 18 seasons reaching the finals on 9 occasions, making the grand final 4 times and winning the premiership twice 1975/6 and 1991/2. The team was supported by scorer Ben Jones (14 seasons) and regular spectators including Ian Hook, Jean Chapman and Alma Gray. The picturesque No.2 Oval Taroona Avenue was home to the Women’s X1 for 18 seasons.

Games were played as far a field as Geelong and Frankston. Warrandyte played on matting until mid 1980’s when a synthetic pitch was laid. Occasionally games were played against district teams such as Melbourne, Collingwood and Hawthorn where away games were played on turf pitches. Within 5 years of the inception of the team the Men’s senior X1 won the premiership of 1979/80 thereby gaining admission to Chandler Shield. This meant that the club were in the top level of the R.D.C.A. and in A grade of V.W.C.A.

For many seasons the club had 5 men’s teams who together with the Women’s X1 created a great atmosphere and the club was very successful on the field and socially.

The two formed a strong opening partnership as Angela transformed her batting, finishing with 4 Centuries in a season.
